Ray Jones
Ray Jones
2007-2008 Teacher of the Year

Ray Jones has been teaching for 34 years, 33 of which he has spent at Del Mar, which is just one illustration of how dedicated he is to not only Del Mar, but to education. His “physics first” philosophy has been the driving force behind the Del Mar Science Department being the only one in the district to have students take physics as their first science course. Ray estimates that through this philosophy, "we've reached 2000 students who probably would never have taken physics." This unique “physics first” idea has even gotten him interviewed for the evening news a few times for its inventive curriculum.

Ray possesses an innovative approach to teaching science, and has incorporated several demonstrations, labs and activities to pique his students' interest in physics. In the words of Principal James Russell, Ray Jones is a "consummate educator... who engages his students using the best educational practices." Ray has been an outstanding Department Chairman, maintaining a strong academic reputation within the science program, and has always been available to assist new science teachers, whether they need help with lesson plans or ideas, or even moving into their classrooms.

“Mr. Jones is one of the teachers I had that made me want to be a teacher. I know many of the students here have really enjoyed having him.” - Stacy Chase

“As a physics teacher, I was so fortunate to have a veteran physics teacher like Ray Jones around! To make physics exciting, students need to experience the laws of physics first hand. I was fortunate to find that Ray shared this view and was always willing to share ideas that I could use in my classroom! With his thirty+ years of experience and enthusiasm for science, Del Mar is losing one magnificent teacher.” - Yasemin Kirby
